The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) London team is inviting all RIBA members, from students and affiliates, through to retired practitioners and honorary fellows, to submit their work for a special summer show of inspiring architecture and design. RIBA London’s Architecture Open 2015 at POP Brixton in south London will showcase concept drawings, models, paintings, sketches and artworks that have been a fundamental part of the creative process in great completed or as yet unrealised projects, in response to this year’s London Festival of Architecture’s theme, Work in Progress.
Designed by the RIBA Award winning and locally based Carl Turner Architects, Pop Brixton will become a new community campus for start-ups, small businesses, local entrepreneurs and community organisations in the heart of the town centre. RIBA London’s Architecture Open will be housed in one of the low cost, low-energy shipping containers that will make up the site. With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, the converted units will provide live/work units, pop-up food facilities, bars as well as an event space hosting live acts, community and private events including film screenings and performance art.
In response to the container units that make up POP Brixton where Architecture Open will take place, the submissions must be able to fit into their own containers, about the size of a large shoebox. As a subtle nod to one of the RIBA’s key campaigns in trying to orchestrate change in how we use space both publically and privately, the exhibition will also be a chance to showcase the innovative work carried out by the profession.
RIBA London Interim Director Owen Wainhouse said: “Our summer show ‘Architecture Open’ at POP Brixton will be a major component of RIBA London’s cultural calendar and our presence within the London Festival of Architecture. The show will attract substantial attention from both the industry and design conscious public and place our exhibitors in the impressive context of POP Brixton, along with a programme of wrap around events that will be taking place over the month of June. This will be summer’s most exiting showcase of inspiring and ground-breaking design.”
