Engineering News Record has awarded the Innovation Science and Technology Building in Lakeland Florida, United States, its highest honour.
Located on the campus of Florida Polytechnic University and designed by Santiago Calatrava, the US$60 million building, houses classrooms, labs, offices and common areas.
Iconic in its circular shape, the building is surrounded by a lake, which reflects the complexity of its design. Composed of aluminum, aluminum cladding, concrete and glass the building functions as the primary campus facility.
The structure, which is designed as a ‘suncatcher’, incorporates hydraulic louvre arms that extend and retract to allow the maximum amount of daylight to enter the building.
A lightweight aluminum trellis that surrounds the building reduces the building’s energy load by 30%.
