Three-week course in Bangalore and Wayanad: Sustainable and Social Architecture in India

Sustainable and Social Architecture in India is a three week course for architects, planners and development professionals. The course will focus on learning about sustainability in architecture and community development in the context of rural and urban India and will take place in Bangalore and Wayanad. Participants will have the chance to learn from local examples, coaches, experts and real sites. They have the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team of architects, planners and social scientists/workers. Architecture + Social (Bangalore)
Week 1 & 2: 2-14 November 2014

- Learning about architecture and social issues at rural and urban sites through analysis of ecological, economic and social aspects. Defining the needs, skills and the problems of the social groups in different contexts. Creating concepts and finding solutions, discussing transformation strategies with the user group
- Learning from the city of Bangalore, through its challenges and its solutions

Architecture + Construction (Wayanad)
Week 3: 15-21 November 2014

- Learning about the region Wayanad in Kerala, its political, social, geographic and cultural settings
- Learning about construction with sustainable materials such as bamboo, mud, clay, ferrocement and lime from Uravu Eco Links and local experts. Studying sustainable water and energy systems which will be explained by specialists in the field. Testing and discussing several models defined by the participants
- The course provides insights into rural and urban realities in India from an engineering, architectural and social background. In addition to an intensive examination of social sustainability, participants will benefit from new approaches and coping strategies between social and spacial design. Participants can expect interdisciplinary tasks on site in a foreign context with hands-on experience
