Reports that Emaar Properties may close elevators in Burj Khalifa until residents pay service charges

Over the last few days, various reports have surfaced of a conflict between residents of the world’s tallest building - the SOM-designed Burj Khalifa - and development firm Emaar Properties, resulting in unplugged air conditioning and out-of-service elevators.

The problems allegedly stem from unpaid services charges amounting to $25,000 for some residents. These service charges enable residents access to the garage, gym, pool and tennis courts as well as use of building amenities such as elevators to the residential floors (levels 9-108).

"A circular has been issued to remind and urge residents to pay the service charges to ensure the seamless management of the common areas and other community amenities," an Emaar Properties spokesperson told CNN. "It was sent after repeated reminders to pay the pending service charges and following multiple attempts to get the attention of the defaulting home-owners."
