Calls for heightened protection for works of architectural significance have been heard following reports of vandalism at Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame du Haut chapel at Ronchamp last week. The Fondation Le Corbusier has requested emergency security measures after the chapel suffered a break-in during which an irreplaceable window was smashed.
The window was hand-painted by Le Corbusier and featured a sky scene. It was broken when the vandals were unable to gain access through a door and an empty collection box from inside the chapel was thrown outside. Attention has also been drawn to maintenance issues faced by the chapel including ‘moisture problems, infiltration and poor preservation of masonry’.
