New York City Convention Center expansion plan moves closer to a reality

The Jacob Javits Convention Center in NYC is one of the busiest conventions centers in the country. It is also one of the most outdated. After plans for an ambitious, multi-billion dollar expansion project were scrapped in 2008, a smaller $463 million plan was rolled out. That plan, which was approved Friday by the Empire State Development Corporation (ESD), awaits only the approval of the Public Authority Control Board (PACB) to become a reality. If approved by the PABC in June, the project will begin construction immediately.

The news is good for the throngs of people who visit and do business in Manhattan. And it is especially heartening for New York’s ailing economy. The renovation and expansion of Javits is expected to generate $880,000,000 in sales, and 9,000 construction and construction-related jobs,” said ESD President & CEO Marisa Lago.

The current plan, developed by FxFowle and Epstein, calls for a complete upgrading of the general building conditions and a 100,000 sq ft addition. Renovations are to include replacing the roof with a “green” roof, replacing the exterior curtain wall with a translucent façade for the “Crystal Palace,” and repairing and upgrading the general building systems. The addition will provide 40,000 sq ft of exhibition space.

Construction is to begin in 2009 with completion in 2013.
