Vancouver Art Gallery shortlist announced

Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Tod Williams Bille Tsien are due to face off in Vancouver, but not over the American Folk Art Museum.

The two New York firms, along with Basel’s Herzog + de Meuron, Tokyo’s SANAA, and Toronto’s KPMB, have been shortlisted to design the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The goal of the project is “to create an architecturally significant visual art museum that places prominence on artists and art and that celebrates the rich cultural context of Vancouver”.

The new building will be roughly 310,000 sq ft, more than doubling the current exhibition space, with a minimum of 25,000 sq ft of exterior space to be used for events and gatherings. It will include a greatly expanded school, family and children’s programming and a 300-seat auditorium. The project is billed by its organisers as a ‘Town Square’ for the 21st Century.

The Museum is currently in the process of interviewing finalists and expects to announce the architect for the project in spring 2014.
