Call for submissions: AIA-NJ requests list of historic structures for preservation in light of Hurricane Sandy

In October last year, Hurricane Sandy ravaged the United States from Jamaica to Michigan, with strong winds felt as far north as Canada. New York and New Jersey were particularly affected and more than 4.5m people were left without power.

The New Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NJ) is compiling a report to be released in early 2014 which considers the preservation of historical structures in the state should a similar natural disaster occur in the future. The AIA-NJ is therefore requesting examples of historic structures that can be elevated or are in the process of being elevated within the state.

Data shows that there are more than 30,000 historic properties partially or wholly within the New Jersey flood plan and will be selecting up to 12 submissions from the call to be investigated, developed or used as case studies in an upcoming report.

Please submit photos of actual examples (current or before and after) and all other pertinent information (including the property address and the name and contact information of the submitter) via email to elevate@aia-nj.org by Monday, November 4, 2013.

Emails must be limited to no more than seven megabytes; larger submissions will require multiple emails. Questions can also be submitted via email to elevate@aia-nj.org, via fax to (609) 884-8608, or via phone to (609) 849-8410.
