Colby College Art Museum expansion to open in July

The Colby College Museum of Art will open its expansion, The Alfond-Lunder Pavilion, on 13 July. Designed by the Los Angeles practice Frederick Fisher and Partners Architects, the pavilion is a modern glass structure that contrasts with the college’s mostly Georgian-style brick campus. The 28,000 sq ft pavilion creates a light filled gateway to the existing museum and serves as a beacon for Maine residents and visitors.

The inaugural exhibition at the expanded museum will focus on the recently donated Lunder Collection, valued at more than $100m, which is widely acknowledged as one of the most important holdings of American art ever assembled by private collections. With the Lunder collection and the new addition, the Colby College Museum of Art will become the largest art museum in Maine and one of the nation’s premiere institutions of American Art.
