Construction underway on New Stanford Hospital by Rafael Vinoly Architects

Work has begun on the Rafael Vinoly Architects-designed New Stanford Hospital in California as part of the Stanford University Medical Center: Project Renewal. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on 1 May with officials gathering to celebrate the official launch of construction. The project is due to complete in 2017 with the first patients to be welcomed to the facility in spring 2018.

The scheme takes a modular approach to ensure optimum flexibility and opportunity for expansion in the future, with a universal module of 120ft by 120ft used as the basic building block. In total the New Stanford Hospital will include: 368 private patient bedrooms; high-tech diagnostic and treatment rooms; a new Level 1 Trauma Center; a 1,000-car parking structure; and 5 gardens. The building will be seismically isolated to ensure maximum protection from quakes.

Rafael Vinoly explains: “This project represents an unprecedented endeavour in the hospital’s successful 50-year history of healing humanity. By reinterpreting and updating the Stanford campus and the original hospital through a modular plan, it is poised to adapt to evolving medical technology while continuing to provide advanced care and treatment - in a healing environment unique to Stanford - to patients from surrounding communities and beyond.”
