2013 Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award goes to Dame Zaha Hadid

Dame Zaha Hadid has been awarded the 2013 Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award, an annual prize presented by the champagne brand. In a lengthy list of reasons for Hadid’s selection for the award, Veuve Clicquot noted the architect’s Pritzker Architecture Prize, two Stirling Prizes, theoretical and academic work, and commitment to philanthropy.

Hadid, on receiving her award, said: "It’s hard to believe, but it’s still difficult for women to break the business barrier. Through perseverance and hard work, I’ve been able to do so, but it’s been a long struggle. When I started my career in architecture it was very much a male dominated industry, but in recent years I’ve seen a growing number of talented female architects join the profession and succeed.

"Half of all architecture students are women, yet women still make up less than a quarter of all qualified architects. This Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award shines a light on our achievements; and I hope it encourages more women to continue with the profession."

Past projects by Hadid include:

Riverside Museum, Glasgow, Scotland
Changsha Meixi Lake International Culture & Arts Centre, Changsha, China
CityLife Milano, Milan, Italy
Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, Michigan, United States
Japan National Stadium, Tokyo, Japan
