West Ham United confirmed as preferred bidders for London Olympic Stadium by LLDC

Two decisions over the future of buildings at the London 2012 Olympic Park were made yesterday by the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) Board. Football team West Ham United have been announced as the preferred bidders for the Populous-designed Olympic Stadium and iCITY has been approved for a 10-year lease on the Allies and Morrison-designed Broadcast Centre with BT to become the anchor tenant.

The West Ham United bid rests on several factors including the securing of planning permission, finalisation of commercial terms and obtaining of appropriate national governing body approvals. The retention of the athletics track within the stadium has worked to West Ham United’s advantage as the LLDC wishes to retain the ability to use the arena for athletics events as well as football matches.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London and Chair of the London Legacy Development Corporation said: “My position on the future of the stadium remains what it has always been: that we can secure a terrific future for this much loved and iconic venue with or without a football team playing there. I hope the detailed negotiations with West Ham can succeed, but I am determined that any deal should protect the interests of taxpayers who have paid for the stadium and would have to pay more for adaptations to make it suitable for football.
