Until two years ago the 8.5 km frontage of Xuhui District along the Huangpu River, in the centre of Shanghai, was an area of disused industrial buildings and holding yards. The city of Shanghai was determined to capitalise on the opportunities afforded by the re-urbanisation of this major area for inner city urban regeneration. To ensure the highest quality and inventiveness of design in 2008 the municipality held a major international design completion for the waterfront area that was won by Peter Verity of London based PDRc Urbanism +Architecture.
Xuhui is now one of the fastest growing areas of Shanghai and the waterfront area, now renamed the Shanghai Corniche, is being transformed into an ecologically sustainable prestigious commercial and residential waterfront area effectively a sustainable low carbon ‘City in a City’. The 48 Group is the leading independent association in the UK for the development of business and cultural ties between the UK and China.
