In the Footsteps of Geoffrey Bawa
The year 2013 will mark the tenth anniversary of the death of the Sri Lankan master architect and guru Geoffrey Bawa. To honour this, architect Tom Jestico and architectural historian David Robson have teamed up to organise a two-week tour of Sri Lanka which will focus on the buildings and garden designs of Geoffrey Bawa while fixing them in the wider context of the history and the landscapes of his native Sri Lanka.
The tour will start from the coastal town of Negombo and perform a clockwise loop around the island, taking in the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the medieval stronghold of Kandy, the central mountains, the southern jungles and the southcoast, to finish in the capital, Colombo. The group will spend twelve nights in luxury hotels, including four designed by Bawa himself, and will travel in two air-conditionedmini-buses.
As well as exploring the ancient cities, you will see examples ofthe architecture of the medieval and colonial periods and will visit a comprehensive cross-section of Bawa’s surviving buildings including his garden retreat at Lunuganga and his town-house in Colombo. You will also visit two wild-life parks and spend two days relaxing beside the Indian Ocean.
The tour is being organised with the support of the Association of Consultant Architects (A.C.A.) on a not-for-profit basis and will run from 14th to 28th February 2013. The price is £2,100 per person with a £550 supplement for single travellers. Numbers will be limited to twenty. The group will be guided by Professor David Robson who is an acknowledged expert on Bawa and the author of three books on his work.
Note: The price includes flights, local transport, half-board accommodation, lunches en route, entry to major archaeological sites and the services of a local guide and a guide-lecturer. It excludes optional extras such as visits towildlife parks.
